The Mudgee valley was discovered in 1821 and has from those early days been recognised for its fertile valleys, diverse soil types and climate. The first grapevines were planted as early as 1858 by a german family, the Roth's. Roth's Wine Bar is the oldest operating wine bar in NSW and you can still sample local wines there today. The township of Mudgee was established in 1838 and grew in population as a result of two historic gold rushes at nearby Gulgong and Hill End in the early 1870's. There is still spot gold to be found fossicking amongst the rivers and creeks. |
Mudgee Today
Mudgee is seen as a small country town that has plenty of old worlde charm and ambience with it's many heritage listed buildings and is within easy driving distance of Sydney and Newcastle. The region has grown into a strong thriving wine and food producing district and celebrates September with an entire month of festivities. Our regional beauty has tempted many artists to live here including some international painters, potters, sculptors and musicians. Nearby Gulgong and Hill End are recognised for their gold rush heritage preservation and cultural significance and are well worth a visit. In the last few years, mining has again become a substantial industry player, particularly coal and there is a new influx of families relocating. |
